May 7, 1945, continued…

… from the fighting to the south, and I was glad I was aboard ship and not out there in the mud and rain.

May 8, 1945

Today we’re leaving the U.S.S. Granville (built in Portland) and finally landing on Okinawa. While we waited in our quarters we received the news of Germany surrendering.

Around four o’clock we’re called to our boat stations. going over the side on the net reminded me of the amphibian training at Waimanalo Bay back on Oahu. We go in on Higgins boats. We climb over the side and march in on a pontoon pier.

Tonight we’re camping in a muddy…
